What kind of maintenance does my sand filter need?

As a general rule your sand filter needs the following three services performed.

1. Backwashing: When your PSI gets 10 PSI from where you started its time to backwash.

2. Lubricate the back wash handle:  Twice a year.

3. Sand Change – every 5 years. If not changed, pool water can become cloudy even with the water chemistry correct. Filter sand is very rough when new and it’s this roughness that makes the sand efficient at filtering. As this roughness is smoothed out, your filter loses efficiency. This means that your system has to run longer and harder to accomplish the same task. It also increases the amount of chemicals, increasing your TDS levels.

How do I backwash my filter?
Depending on the start position of your handle, move it to the opposite position and then turn your equipment on.  Let the water run for two minutes or until it runs clear.  Return the handle to the start position.

What happens if I don’t back wash?
Your equipment will work harder and less effeiciently.  If you have an infloor cleaning system the heads may not pop up all the way.  If you have a pool cleaner, it may not have enough water flow to move it.

How do I lubricate the back wash handle?
Remove the set screws from the push pull back wash handle and remove the handle entirely.  Place Boss Lube or Magic Lube on the o-rings and replace the backwash handle.  (In case you have a multiport backwash handle, we recommend calling a professional.)

How do I change the sand?
Very carefully remove the top off of the sand filter after all pressure has been released from the system.  Next carefully tilt the valve you see inside the filter to one side.  Begin to scoop the sand out using a cup or industrial strength vacuum being VERY CAREFULL NOT TO DAMAGE THE LATERALS.  Once empty, fill with water past the laterals and gently and slowly add the sand.  Lastly, reverse the first two steps.  (In the event you have a multi port valve, call a professional.)

Why is sand blowing into the pool?
A lateral is broken.  Call a professional to replace.
