Pool Drain / Pool Draining
Passion Pool Care LLC servicing pools in Scottsdale and Greater Phoenix, Arizona recommends you drain your pool every year like they drain their own pool every year.
Why do the owners of Passion Pool Care LLC, the Dixons, drain their pool every year?
We drain our pool water every year because the newer the water, the healthier it is for our family of six to swim in. An added benefit of draining the pool every year is that it is also less expensive and takes less time for us to maintain.
Being busy pool professionals, we want to minimize the time and money we spend maintaining our pool and maximize the time we spend enjoying our pool as a family. Draining it every year is the key to making all that happen!
What do you mean newer pool water is healthier pool water to swim in?
Specifically there are three specific pool water health issues that develop over time that draining them is the only solution, no matter how well you or your weekly pool service takes care of your pool.
Problem 1 - High Calcium Levels: results in scale formation on the pool surfaces as well as scaling in the pipes, plumbing and filter. Water becomes dull and cloudy with the calcium precipitating out into the water rather than onto a surface. High levels irritate swimmers, causing sore eyes in particular.
Problem 2 - High Cyanuric Acid Levels: reduces the beneficial effect of your chlorine, leading to stains or cloudy water and the greater amount of Chlorine needed to maintain your pool. The main reason why Cyanuric Acid / Stabilizer increases quickly is that CYA is in every chlorine tab that is put in your pool. (And in Arizona we use lots of chlorine tabs!) Here is something else to consider regarding Cyanuric Acid: Chapter VI of the Maricopa County Environmental Health Code prohibits Cynuric Acid levels in public pools to exceed 100 ppm. The way we look at it, if its not good for public pools to exceed 100 ppm of Cynuric Acid, we can't imagine its good for our families pool or for that matter, any families pool.
Problem 3 - Total Dissolved Solids: TDS is everything in the water that's not actually water. A high TDS level has the following three effects:
1st effect: Corrodes metal equipment and accessories, even though the water is balanced.
2nd effect: Causes eye and skin irritation, even when the pH is right and with no chloramines in the water.
3rd effect: Allows algae to bloom and multiply, even with a 2 to 3 ppm chlorine residual.
Will draining alone remove all the calcium and all the cynuric acid?
While it will greatly reduce those levels, it will not remove them completely as both calcium and cynuric acid adheres to the pools surface and can only be removed by sanitizing / acid washing the pools surface ... see Scottsdale Phoenix swimming pool acid wash service.
When can I drain my pool?
If your pool is a plaster pool, it is recommended you drain the pool when the average temperatures outside are below 80 degrees. Pebble Tec and tile pools like our own allow for a little more grace in the outside temperature and can be drained just about any time.
