In short order, impurities coat the DE in the filter on the DE grids like frosting on a cake. Its the combination of DE with those impurities that makes a thick, muddy paste that just doesn't come out when we backwash. Over time, especially during the Monsoon and after an algae infestation, huge chunks of thick muddy paste clog the spaces between the grids.

How often should your DE filter be cleaned?
Between 2 and 4 times a year depending on the usage.  We have some clients who need their filters cleaned 4 times a year and others that only need it cleaned twice a year.  We believe it depends on the usage as well as the surrounding elements such as landscaping, and the type of cleaning equipment your pool has.

How do you clean a DE filter?
Your tech will take the whole filter apart and take the DE grids right out of the tank.  He will hose the dirty grids off and inspect the grids as well as the manifold (which holds the grids together) and the manifold gasket.  Your Passion Pool Care tech will then clean the debris out of the bottom of your filter.  He will then place the grids back into their proper position, lube the filter gasket and put the tank back together inspecting for leaks.

Why do you inspect the grids and what do you look for?
If a grid is torn, it will allow dirt, algae and other impurities to pass right through the filter without being caught returning them to your pool.

What if a DE grid is torn?
We will likely recommend that you replace all 8 grids if one grid is torn.  Why? The reason being that if one grid went, the others are sure to follow and it will cost more money to open the filter up and take all the grids apart a second time rather than just doing them all at one time.

How do I lubricate the back wash handle and how often?
Twice a year remove the set screws from the push pull back wash handle and remove the handle entirely.  Place Boss Lube or Magic Lube on the o-rings and replace the backwash handle.  (In case you have a multiport backwash handle, we recommend calling a professional.)

When do I backwash my DE filter and how?
When your PSI gets 10 PSI from where you started its time to backwash. Depending on the start position of your handle, move it to the opposite position and then turn your equipment on.  Let the water run for two minutes or until it runs clear.  Return the handle to the start position.  Keep in mind that while a DE filters backwash is harmless, it is nasty and will leave a mess in the area that you back wash it to.
