Cartridge Filter Element Maintenance
Passion Pool Care for Scottsdale and Phoenix, Arizona
Why does my cartridge filter element need to be cleaned?
Cartridge filter elements need to be cleaned because ALL of the impurities that were filtered out of your pool are now trapped in the filament of your cartridge(s). Because cartridge filters are unable to be backwashed, the only way to remove the impurities is to open the filter and clean the cartridges / elements thoroughly.
How Often Do Cartridge Filter Elements Need To Be Cleaned?
Cartridge filters need to be cleaned between 3 and 4 times a year depending on the usage and surrounding landscape. (Perhaps more often if your pool is filter is mismatched and undersized for your pool.) We have some clients who need their filters cleaned four times a year but for most of our clients, we recommend cleaning three times a year and thats usually enough. (The pictures below are from a client whose filter was scheduled to be cleaned four times a year. For this particular client with a tree hanging over their pool, four times a year isn't enough as you can see the filter elements are "beyond dirty!")
What If I Don't Clean My Cartridge Filter Elements Regularly?
Failure to do so not only reduces their life span, it also reduces the effectiveness of the cartridges. Your pool pump is forced to run harder and longer to achieve the same results. Ultimatley, that shortens it’s life span…and all that costs you more money in the long run.
How Do You Clean A Cartridge Filter Element?
Carefully according to manufacturers instructions, take the entire filter apart; removing however many cartridges you have (As few as one and as many as eight.) Next, rinse them very carefully and patiently. Starting at the top of the cartridge and spraying at an angle, work your way down each sleeve of the cartridge spinning the cartridge in 360 degree fashion until all the sleeves have been evacuated of impurities on all of the elements. Prior to installing the elements, inspect each cartridge for brown "toasty" looking areas. These areas indicate that the cartridges may need replacing. Also, check the upper and lower manifolds for cracks as well as the air breath assembly. Any breach in these items and imputirites will simply circulate back into the pool. When replacing the cartridges, depending on the model, make sure you place them in the right location and seat them properly so the water flows properly in the tank of the filter. Once the filter has been put back together according to manufacturers instructions with the o-ring lubed and properly in place, turn the equiptment on and check for leaks.
